rebuild part 4??
«

OMG ! I just want to lob a grenade in my damn car and be DONE with it. Yesterday I was driving around and noticed that my autometer oil guage stopped working. Last night I was doing some sliding and spot racing, and noticed that when I came to a stop, the oil guage on my dash would dip to 0 for a few secs, then go back to normal.
I checked the oil today and barely saw any on the stick. I put two quarts back in and it went overfilled. I drove the car from the Colony to downtown to my shop, sometimes at 90mph. The guages had reset and were working perfect like they should. I called Robert at DM and told him about it, and we are trying to figure out what it is.
I thought it might be the bearings gone bad, since that is a way to lose oil. But Robert also told me (of which I already kind of figured) that if it was the bearings that I would already have heard the knocking from the crank destroying them. I thought for a sec maybe that I missed a turn on one of the mains, and maybe the crank is vibrating around. But the fact that I put 2 quarts back in and the fill line was overfilled makes us both think that maybe the oil pump stopped working or something is wrong/clogged in the pickup.
Last oil change I put 10/40 in it with a quart of 50wt. Rob said that the 50wt is probably causing the problem. So I am about to go to the store to get some more oil, this time the factory rec. 5-20 and see what happens. I pray to God that this is the problem. If it is, it is not that bad and can easily be fixed, versus me having to yank the motor a 4TH time and rebuild it. I know good damn and well I put that motor together right. I mean, the motor has 4500 miles on it, and if it wasn't put together right, it would have already let me know.
Keep your fingers crossed. I will update later tonight with more news.
I really do not want to pull this motor again. Plus, it costs me about $2500- $3000 each time I rebuilt it. If I do have to yank it, I may just bore the block and stroke the damn thing. Better yet, may see about getting a motor out of a Cobra and rebuilding that. If I could luck out, I can catch one with a S/C. But first, I gotta see if I can fix this problem easily.

DSS or CHP stroker save your money and just get the short block you already have the heads and cams. Why keep messing with that motor if you already know that you keep having problems with it. I would leave it to the pros that build engines everyday and not just everyonce in awhile. That is alot of money down the drain on a 2v.

i know how to build a motor.
If anything ends up being major, it's gonna be the machine work..

okay so here is the update. I took it to my shop, changed the oil, put 6 quarts of the factory rec. 5-20, and the gauge was still working fine. Drove it home no prblems, guag operated like it should be. Motor still sounds fine, so I am gonna keep driving it and just take it easty for a bit, and I am gonna keep monitoring the guages to see if it happens again. So, keep your fingers crossed.
Also, I ran a small magnet inside the bottom of the oil pan and was looking for any metal shavings ( which would be a sign of shredded bearings or a crank problem or even the rods ) but found none. Of course, it looks like only about 4 quarts of oil came out. SO that is what makes this all the more confusing. We will just have to wait and see.

okay, so here is the latest update. So far since the other day when I posted this, the oil has stayed at normal level. Guages are reading fine and oil levels are good. Still don't get why i was so low. In all, before the change. I had put a total of 8 qts in the motor, got 4 out. When we left the gtg Thursday, Raul was behind me on the highway and called and said he saw some black smoke come out. That in itself right there is a problem.
I don't get it. Either its the bearings going bad AGAIN - which would indicate a machine problem, or going through the rear mains, or maybe I snapped a piston ring, most likely the compression ring. That would really piss me off cause I spent $325 on those forged piston rings.
So during dinner Alex talked me into buying a 302 short block at DSS or CHP, and I think that is the route I am gonna take. I am just sick and tired of ripping this motor apart. I know that I built that motor right. I AM POSTITIVE. I had a certified mechanic watching me do it, and I made sure it was all good. It's either a part malfuntion or bad machine work.
So this is where i stand. Number 1 - I am NOT racing this car for the next 2 months. I will hopefully have that new DSS block sometime in Mid-Late May. Once I get that in, it will only take me a weekend to do the complete motor swap (as long as I make sure I have all the gaskets, seals, etc that I need)... I've gotten to where i can get the car in the air, lines disconnected, and motor out in about 6 hours. I can get the motor torn down to the block in about an hour at most. As soon as I get it out, I am getting right on putting the top end shit back on the new block. Yeah, so I can do it in two days. Let's just hope that I have no problems getting the new block in. And let's jsut hope that this current motor lasts till then.
But ya, as soon as I get the new block in, IT'S GONNA BE ON!!! and Charles, I'm coming after your numbers!

Yup Alex, I'm DEFINITELY gonna go pick up that 302 block from DSS!!! Put all my top end shit on top of that same block and my car will sound jsut as good as that... Well, here goes another $5000 but this time it will be worth it!
